According to the Electrical Safety Regulation 2013 (Qld), it is a requirement that all businesses regularly inspect and test specified electrical equipment and safety switches in the workplace.  The requirements for inspecting and testing differ depending on the type of work that is carried out with the electrical equipment.

 

CONSTRUCTION OR DEMOLITION

Class 1 Protectively Earthed – Every 3 Months

Class 2 Double Insulated – Every 3 Months

Residual Current Devices (Push Button Test) – After connection to a supply and daily thereafter

Residual Current Devices (Time and Button Test) – Every 3 Months

 

MANUFACTURING – Factories, workshops, places of repair, manufacture, assembly, maintenance, fabrication) – Every 6 Months

Class 1 Protectively Earthed – Every 6 Months

Class 2 Double Insulated – Every 6 Months

Residual Current Devices (Push Button Test) – After connection to a supply and daily thereafter

Residual Current Devices (Time and Button Test) – Every 6 Months

 

SERVICE – RCD Protected Equipment or Supply cord IS subject to flexing in normal use OR is open to abuse OR in a hostile environment:

Class 1 Protectively Earthed – Every 12 Months

Class 2 Double Insulated – Every 12 Months

Residual Current Devices (Push Button Test) – After connection to a supply and then every 3 Months

Residual Current Devices (Time and Button Test) – Every 2 Years

 

SERVICE – RCD Protected Equipment or Supply cord is NOT subject to flexing in normal use AND is not open to abuse and is not in a hostile environment:

Class 1 Protectively Earthed – Every 5 Years (by documented Risk Assessment)

Class 2 Double Insulated – Every 5 Years (by documented Risk Assessment)

Residual Current Devices (Push Button Test) – After connection to a supply and then every 3 Months

Residual Current Devices (Time and Button Test) – Every 2 Years

 

SERVICE – RCD Protected Residential type areas of hotels, residential Institutions, motels, boarding houses, halls, hotels, accommodation houses and the like:

Class 1 Protectively Earthed – Every 2 Years

Class 2 Double Insulated – Every 2 Years

Residual Current Devices (Push Button Test) – After connection to a supply and then every 3 Months

Residual Current Devices (Time and Button Test) – Every 2 Years

 

SERVICE – Not RCD Protected All areas not otherwise specified

Class 1 Protectively Earthed – Every 6 Months

Class 2 Double Insulated – Every 12 Months

Residual Current Devices (Push Button Test) – After connection to a supply and then every 3 Months

Residual Current Devices (Time and Button Test) – Not applicable

 

OFFICE – Office work where the equipment or supply cord is NOT subject to flexing in the normal use AND is no open to abuse AND is not in a hostile environment:

Class 1 Protectively Earthed – Every 5 Years

Class 2 Double Insulated – Every 5 Years

Residual Current Devices (Push Button Test) – After connection to a supply and then every 3 Months

Residual Current Devices (Time and Button Test) – Every 2 Years

 

AMUSEMENT – Work associated with assembly, operational or disassembly of amusement devices and rides:

Class 1 Protectively Earthed – Every 6 Months

Class 2 Double Insulated – Every 12 Months

Residual Current Devices (Push Button Test) – After connection to a supply and daily thereafter

Residual Current Devices (Time and Button Test) – Every 12 Months

 

RURAL INDUSTRY – RCD Protected – Work in the cultivation of any agricultural crop, aquaculture, the rearing and management of farm animals, woolsheds, market gardens or preparation of land for these activites:

Class 1 Protectively Earthed – Every 2 Years (by documented risk assessment)

Class 2 Double Insulated – Every 2 Years (by documented risk assessment)

Residual Current Devices (Push Button Test) – After connection to a supply and then every 3 months

Residual Current Devices (Time and Button Test) – Every 2 Years
